How to calculate square footage
- Square footage = length × width, both in feet. A 12 × 14 ft room is 168 sq ft.
- Measurements in inches: divide each side by 12 before multiplying, or divide square inches by 144.
- L-shaped or irregular rooms: split the floor into rectangles, calculate each one, then add them.
- Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × ceiling height, before subtracting doors and windows.
- 1 sq ft = 0.0929 m², 1 m² = 10.764 sq ft, and 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft.
Check each furniture outline
Use the outer dimensions of the frame, arms and handles. Check door swings, drawers and the space needed to pull out chairs.
Keep routes continuous
Draw the route from the entrance to the places you need to reach. Tape the furniture outlines on the floor and check the complete route.
What to do after you know the square footage
Floor area does not prove that a furniture arrangement works. Rooms with the same area can have different door, window and cupboard positions. Use the measured room shape and furniture dimensions to check an arrangement.
